Supreme Court docketThe Criminal Department represents Arkansas in State and federal court to uphold valid convictions imposed by Arkansas judges and juries. The Criminal Department’s attorneys and support staff work diligently and aggressively to protect Arkansas citizens by keeping criminals lawfully in prison and off our streets.

Arkansas News clipThe Criminal Department represents the State of Arkansas in appeals filed by criminals in the Arkansas Court of Appeals, the Arkansas Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court. Defendants may appeal convictions from Arkansas circuit courts based on a variety of claims.

The Criminal Department assumes the case from the local prosecutor and represents the interests of the State in the entire appellate process. After the State appellate process is complete, many prisoners pursue review of their convictions and sentences through federal courts, and the Criminal Department represents the State's interests in these federal proceedings.

In addition to responding to numerous motions, discovery requests, extraordinary writs and other matters, the Criminal Department:

  • Filed nearly 400 appellate briefs in Arkansas appellate courts
  • Filed almost 200 State and federal habeas corpus responses in new cases received
  • Orally argued 12 cases in Arkansas Court of Appeals and Arkansas Supreme Court
  • Orally argued 3 federal habeas cases in U.S. Court of Appeals for 8th Circuit
  • Participated in 8 hearings in State circuit and federal district courts

In addition to responding to numerous motions, discovery requests, extraordinary writs and other matters, the Criminal Department:

  • Filed more than 300 appellate briefs in Arkansas appellate courts
  • Filed almost 200 State and federal habeas corpus and successive petition responses in new cases received
  • Lodged and/or briefed 6 state appeals were in the Arkansas Supreme Court
  • Orally argued 9 cases in Arkansas appellate courts
  • Orally argued 5 federal habeas cases in U.S. Court of Appeals for 8th Circuit
  • Participated in more than 60 hearings in State circuit and federal district courts
