Keys to Safety ManualThe Attorney General is unlocking the facts to child abduction, runaway issues, and online computer safety. No one likes to think about something bad happening to a child. But the reality is that thousands of children are reported missing every year. The goal of the Attorney General's Office is to protect the people of our state, especially our children.

The Outreach Division of the Attorney General's Office has developed a new comprehensive curriculum designed to educate young people about child abduction, runaway issues, and online safety. Keys to Safety is based on input from students, educators, and law-enforcement officials, and provides a common sense approach to teaching young people ways to protect themselves. Misleading messages about strangers are replaced with practical ways to access help, and students are provided opportunities to practice assertiveness skills, decision-making techniques, and protective behaviors.

The student curriculum targets three age groups. The elementary program of the curriculum focuses on teaching students basic safety concepts with an emphasis on online safety. The junior high and high school program takes a close look at the dangers of running away and includes a discussion about online safety. The Keys to Safety instructor's manual provides classroom activities, discussion questions, and other helpful materials. Fast-paced, innovative video segments have been created for both elementary and secondary students to reinforce the most important points of the program. Another element of the program targets parents and teachers and is designed to provide tools to aid adults in keeping young people safe. The program emphasizes strong communication between parents and schools and explores various methods for initiating discussions in the home. Parents are shown practical applications of safe habits that can and should be incorporated into daily life.
