December 15, 2006 LITTLE ROCK- With the holidays upon us, the Arkansas Attorney General offered some reminders today to help keep Arkansans safe during the rush of the season. A few simple steps can help to eliminate potential dangers that exist with lights and decorations and help prevent fires and injuries they can cause. Each year, hospital emergency rooms treat people for injuries, such as falls, cuts and shocks related to holiday lights, decorations and Christmas trees. In addition, Christmas trees are involved in hundreds of fires annually, some resulting in deaths and injuries, many resulting in property loss and damage. Beebe offered some tips to avoid potential danger:
  • Do not leave candles burning unattended. Keep them away from decorations and other combustible materials.
  • When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label Fire Resistant." Although this label does not guarantee the tree won't catch fire
