April 13, 2007 LITTLE ROCK Today, Attorney General Dustin McDaniel issued this consumer alert to warn Arkansans about a phone scam involving the 809 area code. In this scam, consumers receive a phone call, email, voice message or numeric page telling them to call an 809 number in order to claim a prize, to find out about a sick relative, or a similar reason. When consumers call, they are connected to a phone number outside of the United States and often left on hold or made to listen to a long message, while running up hundreds of dollars in phone charges. 809 is a legitimate area code for the Caribbean; however, in the United States it can be treated like an expensive 900 number or a pay-per-call" service.
